after about an hour of riding, we break out of the forest into the blast radius of saint helens, from here the most astounding views await

so now 2 hours into the trip, the real adventure begins, we are all alone on nearly deserted roads leading through lush old growth forests to the top of a ridge, across the valley from st. helens. beautiful!

with my motorcycle's radio blasting out a perfect mix of techno, and cruising music, we set out to find our way up the back side of mount saint helens. our route would take us through over 100 miles of winding forest roads. for a recently aquired classic bike like my goldwing, this seams a risky adventure

so i finished the jailcell door today, here it is, the white background is just paper that i hung to block the rest of the shop for the picture. all in all this was a pretty fun project. by far my favorite part of it was designing the locking mechanism, and then putting all the pieces together to descover that it worked better than anticipated. the whole thing makes this great clunk sound when you lock it, lending to the jail house feel. i personally thought the vines were a bit much, but the man who comisioned this from me insisted. anyway they will tie in nicely with the ones stationed all over his house

I feel like my body is made out of beef jerky. The desert, and its arid hot air have sapped me of all my strength and liquids. Everything we have with us to drink is close to boiling. And then as I make the first turn west I see the first clouds I have seen all day. They are 2.5 hours away, over Portland but I see them and know. Portland will be moist when we return.

after another fifteen minutes' drive we wind our way up out of the canyon we are in, judging from the size of mount hood in the distance, i would say that we are as far away from mount hood now as we are when in portland although this time to the east. we are all amazed that the land can change this much over such a short distance.

to me this is a beautiful place inspiring of so much thought, like an archeologist sifting through the remains of an ancient culture, i piece together the story of this masive machines' life. Based soley on my understanding of mechanics, and the forensic clues that are left behind, i feel i have a reasonable picture of what this place might have been like at one time. Though there are no tourist signs here to let me know if my hypothesis is correct or close, i feel certain that it is. I found myself explaining this place and its function in a frenzied excitement to both caitlyn and matt, who just nodded their heads making me feel like the universe's biggest dork. making my brain feel even more alone that normal. i felt an expresion spread across my face that reminded me of expressions i have seen my father wear

the magnets for this generator must have been masive based on the size of those keyways in the shaft mounted wheel, and there must have been miles of copper wire spun around the fingers of those winding plates. all the small and valuable pieces have been picked away, and now as i come to see this strange and dead place it occures to me that it is like coming upon a whale's carcass on the beach. like those sunbleached huge bones picked clean by scavangers, this power mill is a reminder of how little i know.

inside the shack are the remnants of water turbines that used to provide power for the nearby towns. this place has soo many layers it is difficult to speculate what it must have been like. 75 years ago, more than a lifetime for some, these great big monsters would be running non-stop, creating one hell of a din!

we stayed ancored and had a barbque for a while, we all took turns ropping ourselves to the boat and jumping in to test the river current. none of us could stay with the boat swimming as hard as we could.

then i see the sails being raised on the boat, they heard, they are comming there is a rescue at hand. Keith the master sailor and in fact the man who saved my life sailed that boat up past the point were we where in the water and let the current bring us to the boat. at that point sean threw me a rope, unfortunately it wasn't attatched to anything, so here i am getting tangled up in a rope while trying to tred water with the last of my energy.

the process of yelling for help is exhausting me, i start to think that this is how it is going to happen. a tradgedy, tears shed by those who loved me, Caitlyn who said good bye to me today expecting that i was having the time of my life would get a call from somebody telling her that i along woth two others had dis-appeared in the columbia river. who would that person be, sean? yes he was about to jump in, but didn't as soon as he saw how far away we were being carried.
